October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM); and every year, the EDGE360 team highlights the trends occurring in the security sector to raise awareness about the importance of cyber security and safer online practices.
This year, the NCSAM theme is “Own it. Secure it. Protect it.” With the focus on citizen privacy, consumer devices, and e-commerce security, NCSAM highlights the importance of taking proactive steps to improve cyber security at work and home.
Own it
It’s important to understand your digital profile. We are constantly connected because of mobile devices. While this is convenient, it also presents opportunities for cyber threats that can compromise personal information. Consumers need to understand the devices they use every day and the risk associated with their constant connectivity by learning and implementing privacy settings and safe social posting practices.
Secure it
Cyber attacks prey on unsuspecting victims and can be difficult to detect. Protecting your business and yourself against attack is easier if you stay abreast of trends in security and cyber threats, the security features on a device, and adding additional security, such as multi-factor authorization, to devices. Be sure to use strong passwords and learn the signs of phishing.
Protect it
Cybercriminals can use your online activity and exploit it to gain access to sensitive information about you, your employer, or your business. Protect yourself from becoming a cybercrime victim by understanding, securing, and maintaining your digital profile. You can research and assess your profile and strive for better cyber hygiene.
