Historically, innovation was a solo effort (think Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison). Today, however, innovation and invention are the products of “hyper collaboration,” which “requires open interaction among businesses, universities, startups, incubators, developers and others,” according to Cisco’s Alex Goryachev in a recent post.

In his “Internet of Everything (IoE) Innovation Hinges on Hyper Collaboration,” Goryachev shares the innovative projects that have been developed and tested in Cisco’s IoE Innovation Centers.

Located in large metropolitan areas – such as London, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Toronto – Cisco reveals that IoE Innovation Centers “accelerate opportunities, deepen relationships and foster innovation.” With centers located in major metropolitan hubs all over the world, those involved with the innovation hubs can:

• Showcase what is possible with the IoE
• Build solutions with partners and startups and engage in rapid prototyping
• Invest and partner with startups, accelerators and universities

The possibilities for modernization and advancement with unfettered, collaborative efforts are endless. For example, collaborators at the Innovation Hub in London are working on networked lighting that can talk to sensors, smart devices, computers and people to improve operations and efficiency. They are also researching the connections between light and heat perception and how thermal comfort and light color affect your emotional mood. In the Innovation Center in Songdo, Korea, known as the “world’s most connected city,” residents enjoy a seamless citywide network infrastructure that links residences, schools, city government, as well as other public services through sensors, smart devices and cameras.

The benefits of collaborative innovation for society and individuals are evident in Cisco’s Innovation Centers and what they have been able to showcase thus far. According to Goryachev, “By fostering the combined genius of local talent and partner ecosystems, some of today’s greatest innovations can materialize to overcome the world’s most challenging social, economic and environmental issues.”
